Exterior Paint for Homes – What are Your Options?
When it comes to choosing a paint product to paint the exterior of your house, the type of paint finish forms the most important consideration as it significantly impacts the final result (for better or worse).
Most manufacturers today offer exterior paints in three main types of paint finishes: gloss, flat and satin.
Let’s take a look at each of these paint finishes and understand what paint job they are best suited to.
Gloss Finish
Gloss paints offer a shiny (glossy) finish to the painted surface. They are the toughest of the three exterior paints and also the easiest to clean. However, they are only meant to be used sparingly in exterior paint jobs.
Why so, you ask?
The reason is gloss paints tend to make painted surfaces stand out by reflecting lots of light off it. So if the surface even has a minor flaw, it can get highly magnified thanks to the accenting nature of these paints.
Recommendation: Gloss finish paints are best suited for painting windows, doors, door frames, handrails etc.
Flat Finish
Next, we have flat finish paints.
Flat finish paints are non-reflective paints; a property which makes them great for hiding imperfections and bumps in a siding surface. They are the most affordable option out of all the three exterior paints and give off a slightly chalky and rough feel.
Their biggest drawback?
They aren’t durable at all and tend to fade more quickly than gloss and satin finish paints. Also, you can’t wash them as they are highly porous.
Recommendation: Flat finish paints are best suited for painting large exterior surfaces of older houses where the budget may be severely limited.
Satin Finish
Last but not the least are satin finish paints.
Satin finish paints offer the perfect balance between durability, color depth and price. They are neither dull or too shiny, last longer than flat finish paints and are less pricey compared to gloss paints.
The best part about them?
They are fully washable; you can even pressure wash them if you want to.
That said, they aren’t still hard enough to be used for painting steps, doors, windows or railings.
Recommendation: Satin finish paints are best suited for painting walls, decks and large siding surfaces.
So what paint are you planning to use for painting the exterior of your house?
